Our programming focuses on the crime prevention issues facing Mississauga today. Safe City Mississauga’s programs may not seem, at first, to have anything to do with crime prevention. This is because many people automatically think of law enforcement – the role of the police – when they think of crime.
Our programs aim to prevent crime by identifying the roots of criminal involvement. We look at the social, developmental, and geographical factors that can act as risk factors for criminal involvement. An example of a risk factor is dropping out of school. Once we have identified the risk factors, we work to counteract them with protective factors. An example of a protective factor is average to high academic achievement.
