We are proud to announce that Aspire won the Best Community-Based Program of the Year Award, which is a prestigious international award from the the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners (ISCPP). The award recognizes an outstanding community-based crime prevention program, which has made the most significant contributions in the crime prevention profession. Out of the many top programs from all over the world, Aspire was awarded the Best Community-Based Program of the Year Award by ISCPP. Congratulations to Aspire!
Dropping out of school has been shown in several studies to correlate strongly with becoming involved in crime. Many programs work with students in danger of dropping out to encourage them to stay in school. However, by the time a student has begun to consider this option, it is most often too late.
After-school tutoring through Safe City Mississauga’s Aspire program works with students in grades K-6, far before dropping out could become an option. Each student is paired with a peer tutor (a high-school or university student). The tutors work with their students once a week on an area of identified academic need. Parents of Aspire participants say that not only are their children doing better in school, but that they have developed better social skills and higher self-esteem, too. Parents also report that they are spending more quality time with their children, due to homework being completed more quickly.
Aspire operates in priority neighbourhoods in Mississauga. The program is currently operating in the following locations:
“We love the Aspire program very much. Both the coordinator and tutor are committed and devoted to helping my child do better in math, and they know how to focus on school studies to improve my child’s confidence.”
- Maggie, Parent
“I have volunteered with the Aspire program since it started and Aspire has provided me with valuable experience I cannot get anywhere else! I’ve been given many opportunities to develop better leadership skills and at the same time help a student reach closer to goals of success. Aspire is something that I look forward to every week!”
- Judyann, Aspire tutor
“I joined the Aspire program when I was in grade one and now I am in grade four.I was one of the first students in the program and I’ve stayed because I really enjoy it! The Aspire program has helped me a lot over the past three years!”
