Overview
The information accessible on Safe City Mississauga’s public website does not require visitors to identify themselves. It is accessed anonymously. However, Safe City Mississauga does collect personal information about you when you choose to provide it, for example, to register for an online course or to use the SafeCity Web App. We aim to collect only as much personal information as is necessary to assist you in conducting business with us via our web presence.
Definition of personal information
Following Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) guidelines, personal information includes any factual or subjective information, recorded or not, about an identifiable individual. This includes information in any form, such as:
- age, name, ID numbers, income, ethnic origin, or blood type
- opinions, evaluations, comments, social status, or disciplinary actions
- employee files, credit records, loan records, medical records, existence of a dispute between a consumer and a merchant, intentions (for example, to acquire goods or services, or change jobs)
While PIPEDA compliance is not required for non-profits, it provides an effective regulatory standard to follow.
Purposes for which we collect personal information
We collect and retain personal information for the following purposes:
- To process your requests for services, products, support or further information
- To communicate with you regarding services, products, or support that you have requested – for example, to respond to a community incident report
- To support community collaboration in crime prevention initiatives
- To meet legal and regulatory requirements
- Correcting or updating personal information
If your personal information changes (e.g. name, address, postal code, telephone number, etc.), or you no longer desire our services, you can correct, update or remove this information by sending an email to privacy@safecitymississauga.on.ca.
Use and disclosure of personal information
Safe City Mississauga is the sole owner of the information collected on its site. We do not use or retain personal information that you provide to us for any secondary purposes unless we clearly notify you and gain your permission first. We will not sell, share, rent or otherwise disclose your personal information to any organization or individual outside Safe City Mississauga unless we first notify you and ask your permission.
Safe City App
The Safe City App is a secure, private online community. Registered users must provide a minimal amount of personal information to be allowed access to the App. No personal information collected within the App is sold, shared, rented, or otherwise disclosed to parties outside of Safe City Mississauga.
Purpose of Safe City App
- To provide a secure, members-only, online space to support community collaboration and coordination for crime prevention initiatives. Connecting with the community is a fundamental requirement of Neighbourhood Watches
- To promote community cohesion by providing the option to share participant names and email addresses within their Watch group and across the Watch groups via centralized information hubs that facilitate communication and collaboration
- To ensure privacy and choice by providing participants with the option to hide their name and email from others within their group at any time
By using the App, members agree to the sharing of the minimal personal information necessary to coordinate crime prevention activities within this secure, members-only community. Tracking and Surveys
We use IP addresses to analyze trends, administer the site, and gather anonymous site statistics for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information. We may occasionally report aggregated information in the form of reports and statistics, but this is not linked to any personal information that can be used to identify any individual person.
Some of the Safe City Mississauga’s online systems require the use of “cookies”. For example, we use cookies when you purchase an online course through our website to save the contents of your “shopping cart” as you proceed from one screen to another. Safe City Mississauga uses “session” cookies only (as opposed to “persistent” cookies). Session cookies are small files that are temporarily stored in your computer’s memory and are deleted when you leave the City’s website.
At times, our site may request information from you via surveys. Participation in these surveys is completely voluntary and you have a choice of whether to disclose the information requested. Survey information will be used solely for the purposes of monitoring and/or improving the use and satisfaction of this site and/or the Safe City App. If you choose not to participate in surveys, you will still be able to use our site or request services, products or support from us.
Protection of personal information
Safe City Mississauga takes every precaution to protect your personal information on the internet. We protect your account information by requiring you to enter a unique Login ID and password each time you want to access your account. Your password should never be shared with anyone.
Safe City Mississauga uses SSL encryption technology to protect personal information (e.g. credit card numbers, etc.) during transmission. A security icon will appear in your browser window to indicate that you are using a secure site.
